21st Century Economic Strategy

We've always pictured our economy as an extension of the natural landscape.  While this may be an accurate picture of our economic past, our economic future is being shaped by a different landscape--the landscape of knowledge--with its own nuances.  Joe Cortright's Keynote Address to the Tenth Annual Challenge of Change Conference in Eugene summarizes how the world has changed, and what communities, businesses and workers can do to adapt--and prosper.

Transportation, Industrial Location and the New Economy

How will the emergence of the Internet and other technologies change patterns of economic activity and the demand for transportation, particularly freight transportation?  These questions are addressed in Joe Cortright's remarks  to the Roundtable on "E-Freight: Metropolitan Implications," held in Portland on March 8 and 9, 2001.   This presentation summarizes the key conclusions of a paper commissioned by the Port of Portland for the Roundtable.   (Download or View 230 KB Adobe Acrobat File)
