Clusters

Making Sense of Clusters

What are industry clusters?  How can they be used to better understand regional economies and advance economic development strategies.  Joe Cortright's 2006 report, published by the Brookings Institution reviews the academic literature on the subject and offers key lessons for policy makers and practitioners.

High Tech Specialization

Many cities around the United States have clusters of high tech industries, but this 2001 report, published by the Brookings Institution, shows that each of these clusters exhibits distinctive technological specializations.  The development and persistence of these specializations over time is indicative of the path-dependent character of the development of knowledge-based industry clusters, and is a critical factor in designing effective economic development policies.
